Pros and Cons of Large-Format Tiles vs Smaller Tiles for Living Areas

Must read

Large-format tiles are trendy—they look sleek and make spaces feel more expansive. But they’re not automatically the best choice for every home.

The biggest advantage of large tiles is fewer joints. With fewer grout lines, the floor looks more seamless and is a bit easier to clean. In bigger living rooms, they create a modern, luxurious feel.

However, they can be trickier to install. The base floor has to be very level, or you may end up with lipping (uneven edges). They’re also heavier and harder to handle, which can increase labour costs.

Smaller tiles are more forgiving on slightly uneven surfaces and can be easier to replace if one piece gets damaged. They offer more pattern options but do have more grout lines, which can collect dirt.

In compact rooms, both can work—large tiles can visually enlarge the space, but sometimes appropriately sized smaller tiles feel more proportionate.

Your choice should depend on room size, budget, installer skill, and the look you’re going for—not just what’s fashionable this year.
