What to Check Before Letting Service Technicians or Repair People Enter Your Home

Must read

Service visits—AC, internet, carpenters, plumbers—are part of modern life. Letting strangers into your private space, though, should always come with basic checks.

Whenever possible, book official service through authorised numbers or apps. You usually get a message with technician details—name, photo, or ID. Cross-check this when they arrive.

Before opening the door fully, confirm who they are and which company they’re from. Ask a simple question like, “Kaunse flat ke liye aaye ho?” to ensure they actually know it’s you.

If you live alone, inform a neighbour, friend, or family member that someone is coming, and roughly when. Keeping your main door open slightly with a stopper or safety chain (if work allows) makes you feel less boxed in.

Put away visible cash, jewellery, and important documents before they enter. Not because everyone is bad, but because temptation is human.

After the work, take a quick look at whatever they’ve installed or repaired. Ask them to show you how it works, and get a photo of any work receipt or service slip if provided.
