How Rugs Can Protect Your Flooring and Change the Look of a Room

Must read

Rugs aren’t just for style; they’re also practical bodyguards for your floor. Placing rugs in the right spots reduces wear and tear where foot traffic is highest—like entryways, under coffee tables, or beside beds.

On wooden, vinyl or softer floors, rugs help prevent scratches from chair legs and constant movement. Using rug pads underneath stops them from slipping and adds a little cushioning.

Visually, rugs can define zones in open-plan spaces. One rug under the sofa and coffee table says “this is the living zone,” while another under the dining set anchors that area separately.

They’re also an easy way to change a room’s personality without touching walls or furniture. Swap a heavy, dark rug for something lighter in summer and the whole room feels airier.

If you’re worried about cleaning, choose flat-weave or low-pile rugs in darker or patterned designs for high-traffic areas. They hide daily dust and are easier to beat, vacuum or wash.
