Choosing Paint Finishes: Matte, Satin, or Gloss for Different Rooms

Must read

The paint colour gets all the attention, but finish matters just as much. Matte, satin and gloss each behave differently on walls and woodwork.

Matte (or flat) finishes have low sheen. They’re great at hiding minor wall imperfections and give a soft, elegant look. They work well in bedrooms, living rooms, ceilings and areas with controlled traffic. But they’re usually a bit harder to scrub aggressively.

Satin or eggshell finishes have a gentle sheen and are easier to clean, making them ideal for kids’ rooms, hallways, and dining areas where walls are more likely to be touched. They strike a nice balance between beauty and practicality.

Semi-gloss and gloss finishes are highly reflective and very washable. They’re best for doors, trims, grills, and sometimes kitchen or bathroom walls, not entire living spaces. They highlight imperfections, so the surface needs to be properly prepared.

You don’t have to use one finish everywhere. Many homes use matte on ceilings and main walls, satin in tougher zones, and gloss just on woodwork. Matching finish to function makes your paint job last longer and look better day to day.
