Turning a Sunny Window Ledge Into a Mini Indoor Herb Garden

Must read

You don’t need a big balcony to grow something edible. A sunny window ledge can become a cheerful little herb garden with very little effort.

Start by checking how much sun that window actually gets. Most herbs like at least a few hours of direct or bright light—basil, mint, coriander, chives, and small chillies can all do well in the right conditions.

Pick small to medium pots with drainage holes. You can group several herbs in a rectangular planter or keep them separate in individual pots so you can move them around. Use a light potting mix, not heavy garden soil.

Water just enough to keep the soil moist, not soggy. Indoors, overwatering is a common mistake because excess water has nowhere to go and roots can rot.

Harvest gently—snip a few leaves at a time instead of cutting the plant down. Regular trimming actually encourages many herbs to grow bushier.

Besides fresh flavour for your food, a window herb garden brings life into the room. It smells good, looks nice, and gives you that little “I grew this!” satisfaction every time you cook.
